Frequently Asked Questions
Start here if you only need a quick answer.
1. What is the Tinnitus Assessment & Monitoring Portal?
It is an online system that helps Patients and Professionals complete tinnitus questionnaires, store results and monitor changes over time.
2. Do I need more than one account?
No. Patients should normally use one Patient account only. Doctors can use their existing Professional account and do not need a second account for self-assessment.
3. What questionnaires are available?
The Portal includes tinnitus questionnaires such as the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) and Tinnitus Functional Index (TFI).
4. Do the questionnaire scores give me a diagnosis?
No. The scores help measure how tinnitus is affecting you, but they do not diagnose the cause of tinnitus and do not replace medical or audiological assessment.
5. Can I complete the questionnaires more than once?
Yes. Repeating assessments over time can help show whether your tinnitus-related difficulties are improving, remaining stable or changing.
6. What happens if I do not finish a questionnaire?
Your unfinished assessment may be saved so you can return later and select Resume.
7. Can I see my previous results?
Yes. Patients can review previous assessments and progress over time. Professionals can review relevant results for Patients connected to their account.
8. Can my Doctor see my information?
A connected and authorised Professional may be able to view relevant Portal information. Your independent Patient account still belongs to you.
9. Can a Doctor delete my account by removing me from their Patient list?
No. Removing a Patient from a Professional's list is different from deleting the Patient's own Portal account.
10. Can Doctors complete THI or TFI for themselves?
Yes. Doctors can use the My Assessments area in their existing Professional account without creating a separate Patient account.
11. Is my information private?
The Portal uses role-based access and privacy controls. Patients cannot view another Patient's records. Please read the website's Privacy Policy for full details.
12. Does using the Portal automatically mean I am taking part in research?
No. Normal Portal use and research participation are separate. Research participation requires the appropriate study-specific consent or authorisation where applicable.
13. Can my personal information appear in public research results?
Public research results are designed to use aggregated information. Direct identifiers such as names, email addresses and telephone numbers are not intended to be displayed publicly.
14. Can I request my data or delete my account?
Where available, you may request a data export or account deletion through the Portal's privacy controls. Some information may need to be retained where required by applicable legal, professional or research obligations.
15. What should I do if I have a medical concern about my tinnitus?
The Portal is not an emergency or diagnostic service. If you experience sudden tinnitus, sudden hearing loss, strongly pulsatile tinnitus, significant dizziness, neurological symptoms or another concerning change, seek appropriate medical advice promptly.
Complete Portal Guide
Open the sections below if you would like a little more explanation about how the Portal works.
The Portal helps you complete tinnitus questionnaires, keep your results together and see how your tinnitus changes over time. It is designed to make follow-up easier for both Patients and Professionals.
Getting started
You do not need any special technical knowledge to use the Portal.
Sign in to your account and use the available sections to complete questionnaires, review results or manage your information.
The Portal currently includes:
- THI – Tinnitus Handicap Inventory
- TFI – Tinnitus Functional Index
For Patients – your account
Your Patient account belongs to you.
You can use it to:
- Complete THI and TFI questionnaires
- View previous assessments
- Follow your progress over time
- Resume unfinished questionnaires
- Review or update your personal information
You should normally use only one Patient account.
How to complete a questionnaire
Choose the questionnaire you would like to complete and answer each question according to how you genuinely feel.
There are no right or wrong answers.
Try not to overthink each question. Choose the answer that best describes your own experience.
When you finish, submit the questionnaire and the Portal will calculate your result automatically.
Understanding THI and TFI
THI – Tinnitus Handicap Inventory
The THI helps describe how much tinnitus is affecting different areas of everyday life.
A higher score generally represents a greater reported impact from tinnitus at that time.
TFI – Tinnitus Functional Index
The TFI also measures the effect of tinnitus and is particularly useful for monitoring change over time.
Repeating the TFI after several weeks or months can help show whether tinnitus-related difficulties are improving, staying similar or becoming worse.
My Assessments and My Progress
My Assessments
This area contains questionnaires you have completed.
You may see the questionnaire type, date, score and previous results.
My Progress
This section helps you see how your results have changed over time.
Graphs can make improvement, stability or changes easier to understand.
Unfinished questionnaires
If you start a questionnaire but cannot finish it, your progress may be saved.
Return later and choose Resume.
If you no longer want the unfinished assessment, you may also be able to delete it.
Connecting with a Doctor or Professional
A registered Professional may be able to find your existing Portal account and add you to their Patient list.
This allows them to review relevant assessment information while helping with your tinnitus or hearing care.
Your independent Patient account remains yours.
For Doctors and Hearing-Care Professionals
The Professional area helps organise tinnitus assessment and follow-up in one place.
Professionals can use the Portal to:
- Maintain a Patient list
- Find existing registered Patients
- Add Patients where appropriate
- Review THI and TFI results
- Follow changes over time
- Resume unfinished assessments where available
Before creating a new Patient, search the Portal first. If the Patient already has an account, use the existing account instead of creating a duplicate.
Understanding Patient progress
Questionnaire results should be considered together with the Patient's history, hearing status, treatment and personal experience.
Progress graphs may help show:
- Improvement
- Stability
- Fluctuation
- Deterioration
The score should support professional judgement, not replace it.
Doctor self-assessments
Doctors and Professionals can complete THI or TFI questionnaires for themselves.
There is no need to create a second Patient account or use another email address.
Use the My Assessments area inside your existing Professional account.
Your self-assessments remain separate from the Patients you manage.
Privacy and confidentiality
The Portal may contain personal, hearing-related and tinnitus-related information, so privacy is important.
Patients cannot view another Patient's records.
Professionals should only access Patient information when they have a legitimate reason to do so.
Please:
- Keep your password private
- Do not share your account
- Sign out when using a shared device
- Keep your information accurate
Please read the website's Privacy Policy for full information.
Research participation
Using the Portal does not automatically mean that you are participating in research.
Research participation is treated separately and appropriate study-specific consent or authorisation should be obtained where required.
Public research results are designed to be presented in aggregated form.
Direct identifiers such as names, email addresses and telephone numbers are not intended to appear in public research results.
Data export and account deletion
Where available, users may request a copy of their data or request account deletion.
Removing a Patient from a Doctor's list is different from deleting the Patient's own account.
Some information may need to be retained where required by applicable legal, professional or research obligations.
Important medical information
The Portal is designed for tinnitus assessment and monitoring.
It does not diagnose the cause of tinnitus and does not replace professional medical or audiological assessment.
If you believe you are experiencing a medical emergency, contact the appropriate emergency medical service.
The easiest way to remember how the Portal works
For Patients
For Professionals
The real value of the Portal is helping Patients and Professionals understand how tinnitus is affecting the person over time.
